Sacred Art

Portiuncula Chapel, Borromeo Seminary

Working with an idea formulated by a committee of Capuchins at

Borromeo Seminary, I embellished the Portiuncula Chapel in Cleveland

with gold leaf stars and a painted border.

This process involved designing custom stencils, laying out the stars that

were above Calvary when St. Francis received the stigmata, transferring

them to the ceiling, priming them with red primer, applying size, and

adhering sheets of 24-karat gold leaf, as well as painting a border inspired

by the stained glass windows with liquid copper. The crown of stars above

the icon of Mary is the Virgo constellation.

It was an absolute joy to work on this commission! I loved working in Jesus’

Eucharistic presence, and each part of the artwork became a new way to

honor and crown Jesus as my King, as well as Mama Mary as my mother

and queen.

A special thanks to Fr John Paul for pulling me in for the project, to Br Mick

and all those who put so much thought into it, to Fr Patrick

Anderson for saying Mass for me, to the construction workers who lent me

their ladder, and to my mom, sisters, and Aunt Trish, who helped me along

the way!
